A Smile in the Darkness by frechstudios A Smile in the Darkness by frechstudios
"A Smile in the Darkness", Watercolor, 11"x14", For Sale (Ask)

So I have been working on a study for sometime with this lady's picture. I took this shot also at the "Local Colors" Culture Fest in Roanoke and I loved the smile on her face and the way the light hit her it seemed like a magical moment and I took the shot :)

This is a beautiful painting. You seem to be working with more of a balance of warm and cool colors where your older postings were more of a warm palatte. Your paintings look more vibrant.

Definitely, I like using the Veridian and Mauve combo - they work well together and they create a blue-ish tint that's really nice. Thank you.

Thank you, I have already started on the next one but it is bigger and I will be taking my time on it. I have some sketching to do and hopefully it will be done by Friday :)! Thank you for the comments, this has been a great piece for me and I actually started this one before the "Christian Man" however I stopped to think about my next step before just finishing it and I like the way it turned out :) Thank you!

Lovely use of colors. The blue clothing really accentuates the purple (or mid-tones, I believe) in her skin.

Also, awesome way to paint a profile image. The location of the light source really makes the piece "pop. "

Thank you and good observations :)

I like to reuse the same colors I used for the skin in the background as it creates color harmony and as you said it really accentuates the tones in the in face.

In watercolor I have found that a strong light source is so vital because it gives your painting that "pop" you said.

Thanks for checking out my work. I appreciate :) Also, I love Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson - they are very similar in some ways I have noticed :)

No problem. You're seriously talented. I've come across a few watercolor pieces I've enjoyed, but they aren't as defined and colorful as yours. It seems as though you know which colors to mix to create a perfect shade. Also, it's like you study features. Each person you paint, looks like their nationality.

Yeah, I often have a challenge with light sources, so I often study the way others use them. The way you used yours was perfect.

Eee! You do? That's so awesome. Yeah they are sort of similar. Both talented artists. I would go into detail, but I might type too much. lol.

Once again, thanks for replying. I comment on artwork I enjoy. Usually typing out some long message. At times I don't receive a reply (not that I expect one), it's just nice to see. So thanks again.

No problem at all. I love to comment back because it is a way for me to say thank you and let you know that I pay attention to what people say.

I do spend a lot of time just studying features and even on my next painting. I have done three sketches already and I have just finished "A Smile in the Darkness". I don't rest a lot because that can be dangerous. I am working on the detail, the layering process, and asking myself a lot of questions like: "what am I saying in this?"

I think it is more about asking yourself the right questions that make a good piece not just simply rendering a good piece. Because anyone can render a piece but to tell a story you have to think differently. Its like a cameraman and a director - one guy knows how to take the shots and record the picture but it is the directors' vision and foresight that creates the picture - that wins the Oscars.

I see myself as a movie director sometimes with only one frame to tell the story :)

As far as Bruno and Michael I think there is obvious influences from Michael on Bruno and it is really fascinating. I love it!
